Topstep Consistency Rule, Explained With Examples (2026)

Written and fact-checked by the Funded Futures Family team against the firm’s published help center. Last reviewed September 4, 2026.

Topstep applies a 50% consistency rule in the Trading Combine: your best single day must stay at or below 50% of the Profit Target. In the Express Funded Account, the Consistency payout path requires your largest day to be 40% or below of total net profit, while the Standard payout path and the Live Funded Account have no consistency percentage. Current as of September 4, 2026.

How the Topstep consistency rule works

Topstep runs three stages, and the consistency rule looks different at each one. None of them fails your account, and Topstep states that plainly.

StageConsistency thresholdWhat happens if you exceed it
Trading CombineBest day at or below 50% of the Profit TargetProfit Target increases; you keep trading
XFA, Consistency payout pathLargest day at or below 40% of total net profitNot payout-eligible on that path until the ratio falls
XFA, Standard payout pathNone (needs 5 winning days of $150 or more)Not applicable
Live Funded AccountNoneNot applicable

Trading Combine: the 50% rule

Topstep’s help center says: “Your single best day of profit must stay at or below 50% of your Profit Target.” Its own example is a $1,200 best day against $2,800 total profit, which is 43% and passes. If you go over, “your Profit Target increases. You’ll need to earn more to pass.” The finish line moves; nothing is lost. Source: Consistency at Topstep.

Express Funded Account: two payout paths

Once funded, you choose how to qualify for each payout. The Standard Path needs five winning days of $150 or more and caps requests at $2,000 on a 50K, $3,000 on a 100K, and $5,000 on a 150K. The Consistency Path needs three days with a 40% target and raises the caps to $3,000, $4,000, and $6,000. Topstep is strict on the percentage: “This is not rounded. Any result above 40% does not qualify.” The calculation resets after each payout. Source: Topstep payout policy.

Live Funded Account: no consistency percentage

The Live Funded Account has no consistency rule. It does carry a payout-size limit that is sometimes confused with one: until you log 30 Benchmark Trading Days of $150 or more, payouts are limited to 50% of your share of trading profits.

Worked example on a 50K account with $3,000 profit

In the Combine, 50% of a $3,000 Profit Target is $1,500, the most you can book in one day without raising the target. In the XFA on the Consistency Path, 40% of $3,000 net profit is $1,200. A $1,200 day is exactly 40.0% and qualifies. A $1,201 day does not; you keep trading until the ratio drops, or switch to the Standard Path.

What changed

The two-path payout structure in the XFA is the notable shift. Older write-ups describe a flat consistency requirement on funded payouts. Today Topstep lets you pick per payout between the Standard Path (five winning days, lower cap, no percentage) and the Consistency Path (three days, 40% threshold, higher cap). The 50% Combine rule is unchanged and still does not fail anyone. Check the XFA parameters page for the current text.

Firms that do not have this rule

Funded Futures Family’s Premier+ plan with Fast Pass has no consistency rule on the evaluation, with 1 day to pass; funded accounts bought from September 9, 2026 carry a 40% rule. The trade-off is price and payout sizing: the 25K Fast Pass costs $114 per month intraday or $144 end-of-day, against $89 or $119 for Standard Premier+ (which keeps a 50% eval-only rule), and payouts are capped at 50% of profit per request, up to $1,000 on a 25K. All FFF plans have a 90/10 split, no activation fee, and no daily loss limit. See the Premier+ plan page and the no consistency rule roundup.

Frequently asked questions

Does breaking the Topstep consistency rule fail my Combine?

No. This is the part traders most often get wrong. If your best day exceeds 50% of the Profit Target, Topstep raises the target rather than closing the account. You continue trading and pass once total profit is large enough that the big day sits at or below half of it. The Express Funded Account works the same way: exceeding 40% on the Consistency Path means you are not payout-eligible on that path yet, and Topstep’s advice is to keep trading so the percentage comes down.

What is the difference between the Standard and Consistency payout paths?

Both qualify you for a payout from an Express Funded Account. The Standard Path asks for five winning days of $150 or more with no consistency percentage and caps requests at $2,000, $3,000, and $5,000 on the 50K, 100K, and 150K. The Consistency Path asks for three days and a largest-day ratio of 40% or below, and raises the caps to $3,000, $4,000, and $6,000. Steady, evenly sized days suit the Consistency Path; profits that come in bursts suit the Standard Path.

Does the consistency rule apply to the Live Funded Account?

No. Topstep’s payout policy for Live requires five winning days of $150 or more and allows 50% of the account balance with no dollar cap. There is no consistency percentage. A separate payout-size limit does apply: payouts are limited to 50% of your share of trading profits until you reach 30 Benchmark Trading Days (days where you earn at least $150), after which you can request 100%. That limit is about size, and it ignores how profit was spread across days.
